A large quantity of gold jewellery and cash were stolen from a Colchester home - sparking a warning from police about storing expensive valuables.

A house in Jonquil Way, was burgled sometime between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on December 14.

The thieves may have left the scene in a green Volvo V40 estate, which was seen in the area at the time.

Police are calling on the public to get in contact they saw anything suspicious, as well as issuing advice on how to store expensive valuables at home.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "To keep your valuables as safe as possible from burglars, we advise you to keep any high value items in a safe deposit box or bank.

"Where this is not possible, put them in a safe, which is secured to a wall or floor and complies with official insurance rating standards.

"Keep an inventory of your jewellery including photos. This can be done in a paper version or online with companies such as Immobilise.

"Make sure you include identifying marks, value, and purchase date and list each one of them on your home insurance and are covered by your policy.

"Itemise each piece of jewellery on your home insurance to ensure they are covered by your policy.

"Invest in CCTV and burglar alarms wherever possible for extra security and peace of mind."
