A HOMELESSNESS charity has appointed three of its former service users into full-time jobs in 2020.

Emmaus Colchester has taken on Phil Archer as caretaker and maintenance manager whilst John Purtell and Paul Reynolds have been appointed drivers.

All three are former service users, or companions, of Emmaus and will now help the charity continue supporting residents at risk of homelessness in the home.

During their time as companions each worked within the social enterprise, helping out in the shops, at the charity's accommodation and on vans delivering furniture across Colchester.

Mr Archer's new role is a perfect fit as he used to be in the building trade.

He said: "I know how things are built and how to repair them, and I really enjoy doing the repairs and painting the furniture."

Mr Archer will maintain the facilities at the charity's accommodation and shops as well as already having helped refurbish the Home Shop, in High Street.

He replaces former caretaker Dave Parks, who passed away earlier this year.

Mr Archer said: "Dave was a top bloke and will be sadly missed.

"He taught me a lot and I hope he’s proud of what I have been able to achieve, with his help, during my time at Emmaus.”

Mr Reynolds is the most recent recruit and beforehand spent six years as a companion.

Emmaus Colchester funded his CPC training, which allows him to drive commercial vehicles above 7.5 tonnes.

He left Emmaus to accept work as a commercial driver, before returning to take up his new role.

Darren Scott, business manager of Emmaus Colchester, said: “Emmaus Colchester is about supporting our companions to live independent lives and get them back into work, we take our commitment seriously and value their progression and what they are able to give back.”
