POLICE say they will track down people intent on abusing children after a “predator” with hundreds of indecent images was jailed for more than five years.

Paedophile Brian Wood was found to have more than 400 abuse images on his phone after officers from the Police Online Investigation Team (POLIT) raided his Colchester home last year.

His internet usage had been tracked after he began visiting sites known to be used by people with a sexual interest in children.

The 38-year-old initially tried to claim he himself only had the horrific material because he was trying to catch a paedophile.

A sickening chat log found that Wood had disturbing conversations with other perverts with a sexual interest in children.

During one conversation, Wood suggested he was sexually attracted to young girls and said 14 was “the very maximum he would go”.

Wood, now of Goodway Gardens, London, admitted possession of indecent images, attempting to distribute indecent images, making indecent images and sexual touching of a child.

Speaking after Wood was jailed for five years and four months at Ipswich Crown Court, investigating officer Detective Con Mark Peacock, from the Colchester Child Abuse Investigation Team, said it was a team effort to bring him to justice.

He said: “Brian Wood is a dangerous sexual predator who poses a very real risk to children.

“He even had the audacity to claim during interview to be a paedophile hunter himself and wanted to expose the people who exploited and abused young children.

“His offending was discovered by some excellent work conducted by the POLIT where his true motives were uncovered.

“This conviction is the result of some excellent work between some of our different teams and emphasises we will catch and bring those to justice who exploit young vulnerable children in the community.”

The court heard Wood had suffered a traumatic childhood, but Judge Emma Peters described him as a wicked man who deserved his jail sentence.

He is also on the sex offender’s register for life.
