COMMUNITY groups and businesses are being invited to take on a landmark historic building in Colchester, with the premises being offered at a peppercorn rent.

Colchester Council is seeking expressions of interest to take over the Abbey Field Centre, off Circular Road South, the old Garrison Gym.

It will become available to lease for up to 25 years from January when the Mercury Theatre vacates the premises.

The iconic former gym, which dates back to 1860, was passed from the Ministry of Defence to Colchester Council in 2010 to be preserved for the benefit of residents.

In 2013, just before a church group was set to move in, the premises were destroyed by a fire. An extensive restoration programme took place, with the theatre moving in on a temporary basis in 2018.

But with The Mercury’s £10million renovation works almost complete, the theatre will leave the building, making it available to new tenants.

Steve Mannix, executive director of the Mercury, said: “The Abbey Field Centre is an exceptional creative space – large, light, flexible and stylish.

“We’ve developed some exciting theatre there, using the space to rehearse, work and entertain.

“It’s a hugely versatile and attractive building and will become a real asset to any ambitious, creative organisation.”

The council says the building is suitable for a number of purposes, including community meetings, conferences, childcare provision, training and education, healthcare as well as cultural and leisure activities.

It can cater for 220 people and features a main hall, utility space, kitchen, a car park, dedicated delivery road, office space and gigabit broadband connectivity.

The lease would be granted at a peppercorn rent, with the tenant responsible for repairs and maintenance during this time.

Mike Lilley, Colchester councillor responsible for communities, wellbeing and public safety, said: “We’re inviting community-focused enterprises to come and look at this beautifully-refurbished and versatile facility, to see how it might give them the space to grow and prosper.

“This is an exciting opportunity and we’re looking for proposals to sustain the future of this wonderful building and secure its place as a valued community asset. I look forward to seeing the ideas that come forward.”

A viewing day is being held on Thursday, October 29, between 9am and 1pm for those interested in taking on the building.

Viewings must be booked in advance by contacting Emma Lamond on 07950 243904 or emma.lamond@colchesteramphora.com.

The deadline for expressions of interest is November 4.
