A traveller encampment has pitched up on the car park of a popular leisure centre.

The group are believed to have settled in at Rayleigh Leisure Centre on Priory Chase, Rayleigh, yesterday afternoon.

Rochford Council are reported to have informed the Essex Traveller Unit of their arrival, which has provoked frustration amongst residents and ward councillors.

Around 20 caravans were spotted moving onto the field in early June, but were shortly moved on from the site just days later.

Councillor James Newport, who represents Downhall and Rawreth, yesterday said: "Travellers are back at Rayleigh Leisure Centre and we have been in contact with the District Council earlier today.

"They said they have informed the Essex Traveller Unit to deal with and there isn't much else information I can give you.

"I am frustrated by the continual lack of action in finding a resolution for all residents instead of this continual merry go round.

"If you want to tell the council that this is unacceptable please feel free to email them."

A spokesperson from Rochford Council, said: "Rochford District Council is aware that Travellers have moved onto land at Rayleigh Leisure Centre car park and Rawreth Cricket Club.

"The Council is liaising with the Essex Countrywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) in relation to this matter who have acted promptly and followed due process which results in encampments being moved on.

"Essex Police continue to closely monitor the site and will be addressing any anti-social behaviour reported.

"As this is an ongoing matter the Council will continue to publish updates as and when available."
