A MAN who was assaulted during a town centre brawl last month has died.

Police were called to Vineyard Street, Colchester, in the early hours of August 19 to reports as many as nine people had been fighting.

One man - a 46-year-old from Bristol - was seriously hurt. He was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition suffering from head injuries.

His condition was described a day later as critical but stable.

However, Essex Police have now confirmed that he died on September 12 - more than three weeks after the incident.

A spokesman for the force said: “The victim of an assault in Colchester last month has sadly died.”

“We were called during the early hours of August 19 with reports a 46-year-old man had been seriously injured after he was assaulted on Vineyard Street.

“The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but sadly died of his injuries on Saturday September 12.”

Brodie Groome, of Sydney Street, Brightlingsea, was arrested shortly after the incident. He was later charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

Police have confirmed they are in discussion with prosecutors about whether the 24-year-old will be charged with anything else in the wake of the man’s death.

The spokesman added: “We are working alongside our colleagues in the Crown Prosecution Service to determine the appropriate charges.”

A 23-year-old woman from Brightlingsea arrested for affray in connection with the same incident has been released under investigation having answered bail.

A 25-year-old woman from Jaywick also quizzed over a potential affray has been released without charge.

Two women connected to the victim were also assaulted during the incident.

A 26-year-old man from Colchester accepted a caution for assault by beating and he has been released without further charge for assault causing actual bodily harm.
