A CONSTRUCTION worker needed hospital treatment after a fall at a building site.

Emergency services rushed to the site in Moss Road, Stanway, at 9.30am on Thursday.

Several police officers and paramedics were seen converging at the scene.

The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust later confirmed that a man had been hurt in a fall.

A spokesman said he had been taken to hospital.

He said: “One ambulance was sent to Moss Road, Stanway, on Thursday morning following reports of a man injured in a fall.

“One patient was transported to Colchester Hospital for further assessment and care.”

It has not been confirmed how far the man fell at the two-storey site.

The project is understood to be turning the former International House building into a block of flats.

No-one could be seen working at the construction site yesterday afternoon.

One onlooker said he saw a huge number of emergency services as he left the gym as they responded to the initial call.

He said it appeared the site had been evacuated with workers all asked to get out.

“I saw four police cars to start with and then an undercover car arrive with what looked like a detective,” he said.

“Then an ambulance arrived.

“All the workers were led off the site and it looked like the whole thing was shut off.

“In the end there were about eight officers.

“I could see them working all the time when I am in and out of the gym.

“I could not be sure what happened really but it looked serious.”

A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed they had been called to the scene but were not leading on the investigation.

It is understood the Health and Safety Executive were expected to attend the site but they did not respond to The Gazette’s request for comment.

Plans for a number of apartments on the site of the former International House site and a nearby car park were approved two years ago despite objections from Stanway Parish Council, which was concerned about the number of car parking spaces which would be provided.
