Two puppies who were found dumped in a layby on one of the hottest days of the year in a cardboard box have sadly died.
It was feared that the spaniels, who were found by a cyclist on Shopland Road in Rochford on Saturday, were "victims of the cruel puppy trade" after a third 8-week-old puppy had been discovered already dead.
The devastating news comes after the pups, who were male and female, were put on fluids and medication with the hope they would pull through.
After investigation, tests carried out by vets near Southend Airport found they had parvovirus, a highly-contagious virus which causes severe vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration.

It usually only affects unvaccinated dogs under six months old.
RSPCA inspector Adam Jones said it is thought the puppies may have been imported from abroad to sell, but were then abandoned when they became sick.
