THE futuristic roof of Southend’s South Essex College campus will have to be replaced just 16 years after it was built, it has been revealed.

The arching plastic roof has become badly damaged by the elements in some areas and has been patched up as a temporary measure.

The college says the steel frame supporting the “bubble of PVC” protecting the soaring college atrium or “pod” is sound but the covering has not stood the test of time very well.

Steve Smith, South Essex College vice principal of corporate resources, said: “The roof on the atrium was installed as part of the original building construction in 2004. Some localised damage has occurred and the college is in the process of undertaking repairs to these panels.

“The structural steel supports are unaffected, there is no structural damage.

“The damage is to a couple of the panels between the steel.”

Mr Smith added: “We are looking into feasibility options for the long term replacement of the roof in line with planned capital maintenance.

“Options to be explored will include like for like replacement or alternative systems now on the market.”

Council leader, Ian Gilbert said the damage was disappointing.

He said: “Obviously its not good news for the college. I am sure they could do without this under the current difficult circumstances.

“The college plays an important role in the town so I hope they get it sorted.”

The college is expanding with plans to build a £19m teaching and performance centre.

Forum II is a collaboration between South Essex College and Southend Council for a mixed use teaching and performing arts building.

Plans include a recording studio, accommodation, a restaurant, new digital art hub, a range of performance spaces for dance, acting, and music, as well as recording studios.

Focal Point Art Gallery will also expand. It follows the success of the Forum, Elmer Square, which opened in 2013.

The South Essex Local Enterprise Partnership will contribute £6million with £2.7million from the council and the rest from the college.

It is due to be completed in September 2021.

The college is also planning a new £30million state-of-the-art college campus in the heart of Basildon which will transform the way youngsters learn across south Essex.
