Shocked witnesses have spoken out about their concerns and fear after a man was left covered in blood after being slashed during a street brawl near a popular pub.

A group of men were involved in the fight shortly after 6.10pm on Saturday in High Street, Old Leigh near to The Peterboat pub.

A 26-year-old man from Wickford was taken to hospital with multiple cuts. He was treated for his injuries and has been discharged from hospital.

A 30-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and he has been released under investigation while police continue their enquiries.

Residents said the town was flooded with police.

Katharine Louise, 46, from South Woodham Ferrers, said: “We were having a lovely stroll along from Two Tree Island to Old Leigh, when sadly had to do a quick retreat.

“We saw large crowds of people and also lots of emergency services.

“There were lots of police offices, ambulances and also an air ambulance with some areas cordoned off. “My partner did see a very injured man.

“It was so frightening and we turned away as I had my 11-year-old-son with me.”

Another witness added: “I saw someone covered in blood. It’s such a bad thing to happen for a nice place.”

Following the incident on Saturday evening, officers were authorised to use additional stop and search powers.

This was in place between 6.39pm until 9.39pm in parts of Southend.

Essex Police Chief Inspector Chris Bradford said: “Officers were on scene quickly to respond to this incident and have been carrying out extensive enquiries overnight.

“Detectives continue to progress their investigation to establish the circumstances behind this incident and identify those responsible.

“Officers have been speaking to witnesses and reviewing camera footage, and I’d like to thank members of the public who have been assisting us so far.”

He added: “We are working alongside Southend Borough Council to have extra patrols in the area today, and I’d ask anyone with information about the incident or any concerns to please speak to them, or to call us.”
