A DEVOTED granddad who promised his grandson they'd lose their hair together as the teenager underwent cancer treatment has braved the shave for charity.

"Life-shaving" Colchester resident Steve Morris agreed to let grandson Kian, 14, shave off his hair to raise money in aid of CLIC Sargent, Britain's leader cancer charity for young people and their families.

Mr Morris, 55, wanted to give something back to the charity after the support it has given to Thomas Lord Audley pupil Kian.

When Kian was diagnosed was cancer in December, Mr Morris promised to lose his hair with him as he started treatment.

He said: "I think the new look will take some getting used to but I know it’s all worth it for this amazing charity.

"I decided to shave my head for Clic Sargent because I’ve seen the massive difference the charity makes to families first hand.

"Everyone thinks I’m mad to do it but I’m really proud to be a part of Team Clic Sargent and I want to help them be there for other families like ours."

He added: “I did feel very nervous when Kian was shaving me but that’s nothing compared to all children and young people being treated for cancer who don’t have a choice about losing their hair.”

Mr Morris and Kian have already raised an impressive £2,715 for the charity.

Last year in Essex Clic Sargent supported 401 families, giving out 224 financial grants totalling more than £46,000.

Research shows families of a child receiving cancer treatment spend an extra £600 each month, show how desperately need Clic Sargent's support is.

Rose Bailey, fundraising engagement manager, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Steve and the Morris family for raising funds for Clic Sargent during this challenging time as cancer isn’t stopping for coronavirus.

“Every day twelve children and young people are still hearing the devastating news they have cancer.

"With the 60 per cent drop in income we are facing, support like this is vital to ensuring we can continue to deliver our frontline service to families who need us.”
