DRIVERS who flout the Colchester High Street car ban could face penalties, Essex County Council has revealed.

New rules, which come into force on Monday, mean only taxis, Blue Badge holders, cyclists, buses, motorbikes and goods vehicles will be able to drive down the High Street.

The changes are being made to make social distancing in the High Street easier as well as encourage walking and cycling as part of the Safer, Greener, Healthier initiative.

County Hall says the new High Street restrictions will be backed by the appropriate orders and officers will be in the town to explain the new guidelines to residents.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “The proposed restrictions will be backed by the appropriate legal orders to amend traffic flows in the town centre and provide the ability for enforcement should it be required.

“From Monday, there will also be officers in the town centre to provide advice and guidance to users.”

Enforcement measures can include fines in certain cases.

Access for residents in the roads off the High Street will be maintained when the new rules come into force.
