RESIDENTS are divided on plans to ban cars from Colchester High Street, a Gazette poll has revealed.

New restrictions, set to be introduced on Monday, will mean only taxis, cyclists, buses, motorbikes, Blue Badge holders and goods vehicles will be allowed to access the High Street.

The temporary restrictions are being introduced as part of a raft of changes brought about by the coronavirus pandemic in a bid to make the town centre more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the Safer, Greener, Healthier initiative.

We asked readers in an online poll whether they supported banning cars from the High Street. Results were split, with 55 per cent saying no, and 45 per cent saying yes, out of more than 500 respondents.

We also asked for residents’ views on our Facebook page.

Wayne Seaden said: “In theory it is a great idea. In practise, it’s a bad idea. The transport infrastructure throughout Colchester needs to be overhauled. As our roads are now, the other roads will not take the overall increase of traffic. Sort them out first and it will work better for those.

“On the other hand, if access to town ie Park and Ride was cheaper and the High Street was more attractive to the prospective shopper, the High Street wouldn’t be an issue.”

Ann-Marie Swash said: “We are an old town with an old road system, this just doesn’t work. Especially at the moment with the Ipswich Road madness, this will just add to the heavy load of traffic.”

Ross Quinney added: “Perfect, even more traffic build up in what is already one of the worst towns in the country for traffic build up.

“What about local businesses, the High Street already has dwindling numbers. If people can’t drive into the town centre it will put them off.”

But Joe Reader said the changes would represent be an opportunity seized.

He said: “It’s about time Essex County Council actually showed some ambition on cycling in Essex. Whilst these plans are somewhat limited in scope, it should be seen as a foundation to build on.”

Wayne Tearle said: “The amount of traffic in the town is delaying public transport and causing great harm to health with pollution. Yes, maybe they need to sort out the roadworks but one thing is use the buses.

“There are plenty and I am sure it’s more affordable than you paying road tax insurance wear and tear to your car and car park fees. Bring it on I say.”
