Charity’s bid to create 31 almshouses in Stanway for elderly residents

Rosemary Almshouses has applied for planning permission to replace its existing almshouses, off London Road, building 31 one and two-bed properties.

The four existing almshouses will be demolished once the first ten properties are completed during the first stage of construction.

Almshouses are a charitable form of housing originating in medieval times, often housing elderly residents.

A planning report states: “The charity has a charitable scheme which limits residents to those living in or born in Stanway who are over 60 years of age.

“These will all be affordable dwellings in line with their objectives and registration as a registered provider is being sought.

“As residents age, it is important to ensure they can remain in their own homes for as long as possible and where practical, the charity aims to provide a home for life.”

The homes are designed with sufficient space for mobility aids, including wheelchairs, and space for an overnight carer and would be inwards facing to promote social interaction between residents.

The report adds: “The scheme has been designed to focus frontages inward to create a community which can monitor each others health and activity.

“Another benefit of the inward looking orientation is residents can self police the community to help prevent crime.”

Electric vehicle charging points, balconies and landscaping also form part of the proposals.

Residents of Stanway, including existing residents of the almshouses, were invited to give their views at a consultation in February.

Colchester Council will have the final say on the plans.
