A HUGE grass fire at a popular beauty spot was started on purpose, an investigation has shown.
Fire crews were called to Middlewick Ranges in Colchester shortly after 9pm on Monday.
When they arrived, grass roughly 100m x 50m was already burnt and a fire was burning through gorse and heather plants.
The fire brigade called in a specialist off road vehicle from Manningtree to get closer to the blaze.
They were able to extinguish it by 10.30pm.
The fire service confirmed it was started deliberately.
