FRESH designs for a long-awaited £50 million cinema and leisure complex have been revealed.

Turnstones Estate is seeking residents’ views on the latest designs for its Northern Gateway development in north Colchester and has launched an online consultation.

Planning permission was originally granted for the scheme in 2018, however, the developer has made a number of revisions to the proposals after changes to the market caused delays to construction.

The completed scheme will now include a 12-screen cinema with Superscreen and 4DX, which is set to be run by Cineworld, seven restaurants, three leisure units - mini-golf, bowling and a climbing centre - and two drive-thru eateries.

Plans also include a 90-bed hotel, set to be run by Travelodge, a car park and dedicated electric vehicle charging points.

Chris Goldsmith, managing director of Turnstone, said: “Our revised plans for the Northern Gateway are relatively modest but will help to deliver an even more exciting, state-of-the-art leisure development for Colchester.

“The changes proposed follow from conversations with future occupiers and will ensure we are providing space that works for them and delivers the best possible experience for visitors.

“Our digital consultation will enable people to comment on the proposed changes before we submit a planning application.”

If the changes to the scheme are approved, a new planning application will be submitted and work could begin early next year for completion by mid 2022.

The development is designed to complement the state-of-the-art sports facilities being built at the Northern Gateway Sport Park, which is set to open this year.

Colchester Council leader Mark Cory said: “Once complete, the council’s flagship Northern Gateway complex will cement Colchester’s reputation as a major centre for job creation and as a magnet for growth within the region, which will attract visitors from across the borough and beyond.

"It will bring substantial employment and high-quality leisure opportunities as well as income to support the running of our vital frontlines services."

Business boss David King added: "We warmly welcome these revised plans.

"They are an exciting and significant step forward in the development of the project and an important expression of confidence in Colchester's future as a great place to live, work and visit.

“In these difficult times, it is great to see this prospective boost to economic development.

"As part of Northern Gateway, it will bring tangible benefits to the borough – from new leisure and entertainment facilities, to much-needed new employment opportunities for local businesses.”
