A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson following the fire which destroyed two police cars.

Emergency services were called to the police station, in Main Road, Harwich, today after the alarm was raised that two police cars were ablaze.

The vehicles caught fire shortly before 10.55am while they were parked at the station.

Police officers closed Main Road, between Beacon Hill Avenue and Mayflower Avenue, near the station while fire crews from Dovercourt and Weeley tackled the blaze.

Several other roads in the surrounding area were also closed for the public’s safety.

The cars were significantly damaged by the fire which police believe was started on purpose.

A 62-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of arson and is currently in custody.

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “On arrival, crews confirmed that two police vehicles were 100 per cent alight.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire by 12.30pm and remained on the scene to ensure the area is safe.

“The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.”

An Essex Police spokesman said: “A cordon around the area is still in place and we’re asking members of the public to avoid the area.”

Ivan Henderson, Essex County councillor for Harwich, said he was pleased the police has such a quick response to the incident.

“This fire could have had serious consequences to residents or police if it continued,” he added.

“It is a relief that no-one has been injured and all residents have been kept safe.

“I have been assured that there will be a full investigation.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the fires to come forward.
