SOLDIERS from Colchester Garrison have been called up to fight in another war, but this time it is against an invisible enemy.

Our troops have served on the frontline in Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years but now they are standing alongside ambulance crews in the war against coronavirus.

The East of England Ambulance Service has been under siege since the outbreak of the pandemic and it too is looking for volunteers to help it.

It is looking for 1,000 temporary workers and volunteers to help drive ambulances and support paramedics as they attend those in need.

Firefighters, too, will be helping out, driving the ambulances freeing up medics to use their skills.

Again we see the best of British - services standing side-by-side to help the nation, utilising their talents in whatever way they can to beat this terrible virus.

Thousands of volunteers also began working for the NHS today.

Social distancing and isolation has created a disparate and lonely society so it is even more heartening to see those who can pulling together.

We can all play our part, no matter how small.

Colchester Council has threatened to close Castle Park and other public sites if people do not observe social distancing and exercise rules to stop the spread of coronavirus.

What a shame if the selfish actions of a minority ruin these sanctuaries.

But, if it has to be done, so be it.

We are all fighting this war.
