A NEW initiative aiming to bring the great outdoors to those stuck in lockdown is launching in Colchester.

Members of Colchester Council's parks team, who are usually busy running activities across the borough during the spring, have designed a series of fun activities which can be done inside whilst the countrywide lockdown is in place.

Each week the team will share their ideas to keep youngsters, and adults, entertained using the hashtag #ParksAtHome.

The first activities of the Parks at Home initiative include designing a photo map and looking at different types of shapes.

Going forward some will lightly touch on core curriculum subjects, aiming to make learning fun and give parents different home-school activities to try.

Martin Goss, councillor responsible for waste, environment and transportation, said: "This is undoubtedly a difficult time for everyone.

"Routines have changed, and children are having to adjust to home schooling.

"Our Parks at Home initiative is intended to bring some fun, joy and creativity into the week.

"All of the activities can be done from home, regardless of access to a garden or outdoor space, or completed while going outside for our permitted one walk a day.

"The parks team would love to see what you’ve achieved, so please share your efforts with us on social media using the #ParksAtHome.”

Colchester Council's parks and open spaces remain open to the public, however residents are urged to comply with social distance guidelines whilst exercising and stay two metres apart from other members of the public.

Groups of more than two people are banned and the borough's playparks as well as car parks at country parks are also closed.
