WORKS to light up Colchester's iconic Roman Wall at night have been completed.

Colchester Council has installed LED lighting along a 250m stretch of the wall to the north and south of Balkerne Gate.

The wall will be lit from dusk until 11pm each night, on a permanent basis.

Julie Young, deputy leader and councillor responsible for culture and performance, said: "Celebrating our heritage and making Colchester even more inviting is a key part of our Better Colchester campaign, and these two fantastic lighting schemes do just that.

“I am thrilled with the lighting and how it showcases our wonderful heritage, and I hope residents and visitors enjoy seeing them highlighted in this way too.”

The wall works follow new colour change lighting being installed at Colchester Castle in February.

Both schemes were rubber stamped by experts at Historic England and have been completed in conjunction with Universal Stone Ltd.

Leader Mark Cory said: "We are really committed to celebrating our heritage and this new lighting shows off two of our most prominent pieces of heritage lit up after dark.

"This is just one of many Better Colchester projects around the town and borough, shining a light on the wonderful assets Colchester has to offer.”

Former Conservative leader Darius Laws was instrumental in bringing the light project to fruition.
