A MOVE to make a dangerous manoeuvre illegal is set to come into force this month.
Essex Highways previously announced a traffic regulation order is set to be enforced at Lewis Gardens, in High Street, Colchester.
Motorists frequently turn into the junction to avoid a bus lane and access Queen Street.
A traffic island and bollards were installed to try and stop the problem, but proved ineffective.
Essex County Council’s record of accidents at Lewis Gardens recorded four incidents between October 2013 and September 2018.
In one crash in July 2018, a 72-year-old woman was seriously injured when she was involved in a collision with a car carrying out the manoeuvre.
Colchester Civic Society is worried drivers will continue to use other roads, such as the nearby Roman Road, to make the U-turn.
Those performing the U-turns can be investigated by Essex Police and prosecuted from Monday, March 9.
