Behind the Manor Barn car park are delightful gardens in which to sit, rest and admire which is also an ideal picnic spot. From the car park exit, turn left along De La Warr Road and cross at the traffic island to go along Church Street. Enter St Peter’s churchyard through the lych-gate. Go up the path ahead and around to the left of the building, part of which dates from the eighth century. Just past the west door, look up to see St Peter’s shield with cross and keys sculptured in stone above the windows. Leave the churchyard going along a twitten signed “Footpath to Crowhurst”. Cross the footbridge over King Offa Way (Old Town by-pass) and down winding steps. At an estate road, turn left and at the end go along a twitten between numbers 30 and 32. Follow the path where it turns right running parallel to and meets Hollier’s Hill.

Cross the road, turn left and, in about 100 yards, turn right into Barrack Road. The memorial garden on the right commemorates the King’s German Legion. The information board is missing but details are online at www.bexhilloldtown.org/the-kgl-barracks. Continue past Chantry Primary School to the end of the road. Do not enter the subway on the left but go down the twitten immediately past First Friends Day Nursery. At the bottom, go over the zebra crossing, through the underpass beneath Combe Valley Way and turn right along a wide tarmac path. At the end, turn left on a footway and, at a roundabout, turn left along a twitten. Follow this around and alongside an open green space, then turn right along a path to Down Road. Turn right uphill on the footway, going past the Parish Church of St Stephen. Cross the road here and continue direction to the road junction.

Turn left along Broad Oak Lane (not West Down Road); note the flint stone walls. In about 400 yards, turn left down Warwick Road. At the bottom, turn left and cross the main road (A259) at the long traffic island. Turn left, then sharp right along Collington Lane East. Turn left into Collington Park Crescent, then left again. In about 200 yards, where the road forks, bear right to continue along Collington Lane East. At the end, turn left, cross the major road and go along Pages Lane.

In about 200 yards, turn left through a twitten by a broken footpath sign, continuing direction through Collington Wood where there are seats. Leaving the wood, turn right then left into Terminus Avenue. Where it joins Terminus Road, continue direction for a short distance and turn right through a subway beneath the railway. Cross Wickham Avenue, turn right, then left into Brockley Road, left again into Woodville Road and, almost immediately right through a twitten into Egerton Park. Just past the children’s playground, turn right and go past Bexhill Museum (toilets adjacent) on the right. At the next corner, go up steps, cross the road to go along Park Road to the seafront.

Cross West Parade by an ice cream hut to the promenade and turn left. Go past the De La Warr Pavilion (or visit) and, at the end of the promenade, turn left to De La Warr Parade. Turn right and go over the zebra crossing, continuing direction for a few paces, then turn left into Sea Road, signed Bexhill Old Town. Continue past the rail station (unless finishing here) and continue on Upper Sea Road along the raised footway on the right, bearing right at the top into Manor Barn gardens.
