RACY proposals have been unveiled to turn a former Chinese restaurant in Colchester town centre into a “sex entertainment venue”.

Colchester firm Solo Summers has applied to change the use of the old Embassy Oriental Buffet, in Balkerne Hill.

Plans state the new business would offer “adult cabaret” entertainment as well as drinks and snacks exclusively via table service to customers.

As patrons enter on the ground floor they’ll be a bar, tables, DJ booth, cloakroom and toilets.

The first floor will be the main performance area, with raised stages, more tables, another DJ booth and a number of private booths.

Upstairs will feature facilities for performers such as changing rooms, showers and lockers.

A planning report states: “The proposed business use is for a more adult cabaret seated venue in line with sexual entertainment venue licensing requirements.

“The use of the site is not one for a nightclub type venue and as we clearly state all patrons will be table served by the employed staff.

“In addition, in house employed security will be on duty at all times inside and outside the venue to control the patrons whilst at the venue.”

The business would create between 15 and 20 full-time jobs whilst plans say there will be further opportunity for “self employed dance performers”.

Ward councillor Mark Goacher (Green, Castle) said: “I have a few concerns but I will have to consult with residents to find out their take on it.

“I am a liberal kind of person but I am not sure it is the right location for this kind of thing.”

Simon Crow (Con) added: “I have seen the application and will be talking to residents in my ward to gauge their reaction and views so I can accurately respond.”

The premises was Capital Chinese restaurant before it closed last year but was also home to the Embassy Suite for decades.

Solo Summers wants to open between 8pm and 4am seven days a week.

Black out vinyl and “discreet street signage” will be added to the building.

A licensing application will also need to be submitted to Colchester Council.
