THERE are plenty of event being staged across Conwy to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade Fortnight will run between Monday, February 24 and March 8.

This year the focus is on cocoa farmers, especially women, who grow the cocoa in chocolate.

Just £1.86 a day makes a living income for a West African cocoa farmer, but a lot of cocoa farmers are earning about 74p a day and living in poverty.

Kay Pitt, secretary of Conwy Fairtrade group, said: “We are so proud that Wales became the first ever Fairtrade nation in 2008, but there’s still a long way to go.

"We need more people to understand the importance of buying Fairtrade products, and realising how much is available now, we’ve moved on a long way from coffee, tea and chocolate.

"We hope to get that message across through all the events we have arranged this year."
