PARENTS praised a school for caring deeply for the children’s progress and future when inspectors paid a visit.

Montgomery Junior School, in Colchester, was visited by Ofsted inspectors who rated it good across the board.

The school has historic ties to the armed forces, situated in the heart of Colchester Garrison and established in 1966 exclusively for the children of servicemen and women. Due to this, the school has considerable experience in supporting military families.

A report released following the inspection said: “Pupils often join throughout the year, yet settle quickly due to the welcoming and supportive ethos of the school.

“Pupils feel happy and safe and their needs are catered for.”

“Many parents and carers appreciate the support on offer.”

“One parent commented: “This school cares deeply for the children’s progress, wellbeing and future.”

Inspectors found staff have high expectations for pupils’ behaviour, provide good support to pupils who need it and work hard to develop their self-esteem.

Inspectors focused on the teaching of writing as a particular strength, finding many pupils already considered themselves authors.

“Pupils study different types of text and learn which features to include in their writing,” they said. “Pupils enjoy writing and many see themselves as authors.”

Headteacher Michelle Wright said: “We are delighted with the recent Ofsted report and will continue to work hard as a staff to ensure the children in our care receive the best education possible during their time with us.”
