A MAN was rescued from waist-deep mud after getting stuck in a riverbed.

Fire crews plucked the man from the banks of the River Colne off Haven Road, Colchester, shortly after 6pm on Tuesday.

The man in his 40s was stuck up to his waist some 20 metres from land when crews arrived.

They used rescue equipment and were able to winch him out within 45 minutes.

Eagle-eyed students had called the emergency services after spotting the man was in trouble.

He was left with the ambulance service.

A spokesman said: "We were called to King Edward Quay in Colchester at around 6.10pm yesterday following reports that a man was stuck in mud.

"We sent an ambulance and ambulance officer but no one required transporting to hospital."
