A FORMER Colchester student will relive her 1,800-mile journey to Greenland in a wooden boat.

Naomi Hart, a former student at Colchester County High School for Girls, will be telling the story of her Arctic expedition to raise money for St Helena Hospice.

The artist travelled from Cornwall to remote East Greenland in a Scillonian Pilot Cutter.

During the two-month mission she and the crew faced katabatic winds, fog and the ice pack.

She documented the journey by drawing what she saw and taking photographs.

Naomi said: “I’m not an adrenaline-seeking traveller, but I’ve always felt the need for new challenges.”

“When I’ve lived somewhere for a while, I begin to feel that I know how it works, so I need to put myself in a new situation that forces me to figure it all out again.

“It’s terrifying, but at the same time really invigorating when you realise you can still cope - so it’s not hard to make the leap to a boat when you’ve never sailed and to travel thousands of miles with people you’ve just met.”

She will share her sketches and photographs at a fundraising talk along with tales of whales, icebergs and the midnight sun at the Learning and Development Centre at St Helena Hospice on February 4. Tickets are £10. To reserve a place, email naomi@naomihart.com.
