A BUSINESS boss has been forced to send staff home early because disruptive roadworks are killing his trade.

Robert Sloan, owner of Sloans Tyres, based on Sutton Road, Southend, says he can no longer afford to pay staff.

He says there are no signs at nearby gasworks on Sutton Road to say they are open.

These works have been going for two weeks. As a result, the amount of customers through the door at the garage have dried up.

The roadworks, being carried out by Cadent Gas, are set to last until February 14, and have also caused traffic headaches to residents and businesses.

Mr Sloan explained how frustrated he and his staff are.

He said: “No one is helping us.All we’re asking for is a sign. We’ve offered to do it ourselves but we’ve been told we’re not allowed.

“I don’t want to break the law and put it up but what other options do we have? I’ve had to send staff home because there is no point them being here. All over a sign.”

The planned gasworks, which are replacing old gas mains on Sutton Road, have completely closed parts of it. The road is closed from Ennismore Gardens along to Oakhurst Road.

Mr Sloan added: “We’re only a small business. We’ve been here as a garage since 1928. We don’t want to close now. Customers are assuming we are closed until after the roadworks. But we are still open. It’s so frustrating.”

A council spokesman said: “The Sutton Road roadworks are for Cadent to undertake essential gas maintenance works.

“We always ensure that Cadent installs sufficient signage to warn motorists of potential delays or disruption, that businesses remain open and also diversion routes where applicable.

"In addition to this, Cadent gave all businesses and residents notice of the works.”

Cadent was contacted for a statement.
