HUNDREDS of spectators watched a hunt as it rode into Maldon on New Year’s Day.

The traditional hunt, organised by the Essex with Farmers and Union Hunt, was greeted by supporters but also hunt saboteurs.

Spectator Robin Woosey, of Tolleshunt Major, said: “I go there every year, it’s quite a feature.

“When the hunt came up there was quite a few police there on duty and they made sure the protestors were pushed right back.

“The protestors are always peaceful. They come every year and don’t cause issues other than shouting but that’s all.”

Under current law, it is illegal to hunt foxes with a pack of dogs.

However, hunts can use dogs to simulate hunting, for example, drag or trail hunting in which dogs and riders follow a scent.
