THESE vintage images show Colchester’s connection with trams.
Mainly turn of the century recollections of a time when they were the principal mode of transport, there was also a time portugal shipped some over to Rowhedge, captured here.
In 1901, Colchester Corporation authorised the construction of more than five miles of track but work did not begin until 1904.
A special depot was built at Magdalen Street for 16 new, open-top, double-decker trams which travelled three routes, all beginning at the North Station.
By 1927 there was not enough funding for the repairs or new trams and two years later buses replaced them.
