A MAN has appeared in court charged with causing a crash which left a man with serious injuries.

Saad Jamil was in the dock at Chelmsford Crown Court after a man was hurt in a crash in Avon Way, Colchester, in November last year.

During the short hearing, the 21-year-old spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and nationality.

He also denied a single charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Jamil does, however, accept he was driving the Seat Leon vehicle on the night in question.

Police launched an investigation after a man in his twenties was involved in a collision with a car on the Greenstead estate close to the junction of Alefounder Close.

The car was then driven towards the Greenstead roundabout and the A133.

Police officers and paramedics attended the scene and the man who was injured was taken to hospital for further care.

He was also helped by passersby.

His injuries were described as being serious but not life threatening.

He has since undergone surgery as part of his treatment.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit based in Stanway launched an urgent appeal for witnesses and to try to find anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage which could help in their inquiries.

A man was arrested on the night but then released under investigation.

Jamil, who was dressed in a smart suit and tie for the hearing yesterday, was told his trial will be scheduled for June next year.

It is expected to last three days.

Judge Charles Gratwicke checked he had been warned sentencing would be greater if he is convicted rather than admitted the charge and that Jamil was helping to put together a defence case statement.

Jamil was granted bail, with the sole condition that he resides at his home address in Sunnyside Lane, Bradford, in Yorkshire.

“This matter is going into a warned list,” he said.

“You have been granted bail with the condition you live at the address which has been given to the court.”
