A GROUND worker from Colchester who turned his back on gang culture has been named an inspirational apprentice.

David Voss, 24, was just a child when he was encouraged to become involved in a gang.

After moving to Essex he tried to get into work but found it difficult as he was behind in his education and a lack of work experience.

Determined not to give up he got himself a number of short term jobs as a site labourer.

At 20, he signed up for an apprenticeship and has not looked back.

He has since become a mentor for other people taking on apprenticeships and is now a construction operator.

David was named Inspirational Apprentice of the Year at the Construction Industry Training Board Apprenticeship Awards.

He was presented the award by property entrepreneur Sarah Beeny at a ceremoney in London.

David said: “I am so pleased and at the same time shocked to win this award.

“My apprenticeship was a great experience and I would fully recommend it as a route to a brilliant career because you get the balance of learning and practical experience.

“I’d like to thank my employer, J L Roadworks (based in Kelvedon) and the National Construction College as they supported me all the way in my apprenticeship”.

Alan Bridgman, Construction Industry Training Board Apprenticeship Officer, praised David for his dedication.

He said: “David has shown an outstanding commitment to his personal development, in firstly sourcing work, which in his early life was alien to him. Knowing education had always been a barrier, David provided a portfolio of work to submit in his application which earned him a merit.

“He took a year one apprentice under his wing, helping him with his learning and development on site.

“He would explain to him what needed to be done and how.

“David became his mentor and with the experience of his apprenticeship, supported him through his first year offering his guidance and advice.”

“David is a polite, dedicated individual and extremely deserving of this award.”
