A HOST of special events are set to help celebrate a school’s 125th birthday.

Tuesday will mark 125 years since North Primary School, in John Harper Street, Colchester, opened its doors to its first intake of 181 pupils.

On the big day, celebrations will include speeches, a birthday cake and afternoon tea.

All of this year’s pupils have been working on its CXXV project, paid for by National Lottery Heritage Funding, which is exploring its history.

Staff and pupils at the school will be joined by Deputy Lieutenant of Essex Simon Hall, Colchester mayor and mayoress Nick and Elizabeth Cope, Colchester High Steward Sir Bob Russell and chairman of Essex County Council John Jowers.

The pupils have worked with artists Nicola Burrell and Lisa Temple Cox to create permanent artworks for the school celebrating its 125 years.

Next week they will get to see them for the first time.

The ceremony will be followed by a special afternoon tea featuring recipes picked by the children and school cook.

It includes London Buns which were on the school’s cookery syllabus in 1895.

On Saturday, the school will open its doors to the public for a big birthday bash.

It takes place from 1pm to 5pm with performances, fairground rides, magic, music, delicious food and historical displays.

Headteacher Alan Garnett said: “The children and staff are getting excited as we count down the number of sleeps to our dear old school’s 125th birthday on glorious November 12.

“We are looking forward to welcoming so many important people to share this special occasion with us - VIPS from across Essex, lords, ladies, sheriffs, mayors, education partners from across Europe, and all the people who have turned one day in the diary to a year-long celebration of the school’s wonderful history.

“The 12th will be a dignified, formal occasion. The event on the 16th will be a proper party with a carnival atmosphere.

“There will also be an opportunity to see and contribute to the history archives and view the specially commissioned art pieces which commemorate CXXV.

“All of Colchester is invited.”
