AN injury time goal from Daniel Akindayini allowed Great Wakering Rovers to claim a 1-1 draw in an entertaining local derby with Basildon United.

Danny Norton put the Bees ahead in the Isthmian North encounter, which also included a missed penalty from the Bees’ Adam Vyse.

Vyse, team-mate Ayo Odukoya and Wakering skipper Marc Gorbell saw red in a feisty local derby before Akindayini struck.

Basildon were offered a golden opportunity to take the lead inside four minutes.

Odukoya’s mazy run was clumsily brought to an end by a rash Joe Heath challenge and referee Jack Willmore did not hesitate in pointing to the spot.

However, Wakering goalkeeper Bobby Mason dived to his right to keep out Vyse’s fourth minute penalty.

The hosts then passed up another presentable chance as Norton was played in on goal after a long pass over the top split the Wakering defence.

With just Mason to beat, Norton’s strike went over the crossbar.

Wakering responded with Heath’s looping header, after Basildon failed to clear a corner, being kept out by Bees custodian Clarke Bogard.

The home side were made to rue their missed chances as, with 24 minutes on the clock, Vyse was given his marching orders due to violent conduct.

Having only joined in the summer, it was the frontman’s second dismissal of the season after also being red carded on his debut at Bury Town last month.

Wakering came within a whisker of breaking the deadlock two minutes before the break.

Nathan Okoye could only deflect an attempted through ball into the path of Alfie Hilton who, after cutting inside, saw his effort deflect inches wide.

The first meaningful shot of the second period came from Wakering’s Jake Gordon, whose long range effort curled over the top.

And Basildon had Bogard to thank just before the hour mark as the custodian stuck a foot out to deny Martin Tuohy from point blank range.

That save proved to be crucial as, with 61 minutes on the clock and against the run of play, Norton found the bottom corner of the net after latching onto an inviting cross.

Wakering came agonisingly close to levelling matters immediately as Hilton’s drive deflected onto the post before being claimed by a grateful Bogard, who had initially been wrongfooted.

Okoye then made a vital clearance as Tuohy was preparing to pull the trigger after a fine team move involving Gordon and Jack Stevenson.

Wakering continued to push for a leveller and Gordon dragged an effort wide from the edge of the penalty area as the encounter ticked into the final 10 minutes.

A superb Joe Turpin block kept Tuohy at bay when the goal was at the striker’s mercy.

With less than five minutes remaining, Basildon’s Odukoya and Wakering captain Gorbell were dismissed for an off-the-ball incident.

And Wakering were to grab an injury time leveller as Akindayini converted from a narrow angle.
