THE winners of a historic race have been crowned.
Fergal McGarth and Kevin Booker took home the Layer Marney Cup,which judges cars on their fuel consumption, with a weighted score of 121.72 miles per gallon per ton. The race, which dates back to 1914, takes drivers through 70 miles of the north Essex countryside to Layer Marney.
There the participants displayed their iconic vehicles among the grounds of the Tudor tower.
Sheila Charrington, of Layer Marney Tower, said: “The winners hold a world record on a fuel economy drive to John O’Groats and on our drive they produced some spectacular figures.
“There were 50 cars in all, dating right back to 1920, some huge like the 1956 Rolls Royce Silver.”
Before the race cars are weighed so the miles per gallon driven can be recalculated to miles per gallon per ton so heavier vehicles can compete on a level playing field.
