THE A12 is set to be shut overnight for four weeks while road resurfacing takes place - and drivers face a 20 mile diversion.

Highways England will shut eight miles of the road between the Ardleigh Interchange and the junction at Capel St Mary in two phases in August and September.

It is expected to take around four weeks to complete the work with includes resurfacing, renewal of road markings and road studs.

The road will be shut overnight from August 9 for ten nights. It will then close again for nine nights from August 27.

All closures are from 9pm until 5am on weekdays.

Highways England has released an official diversion of 20 miles - adding 30 minutes to journeys - and taking drivers via Brantham and up to the A14 in Suffolk.

When the road is closed the diversion for eastbound traffic will be via junction 29, Ipswich Road, the A133 and the A137 up to junction 56 at the A14.

Drivers will then have to travel west to meet the A12 and A14 at junction 55.

The westbound traffic will use the route in reverse.
