SOUTHEND United fans have been accused of subjecting one of their own players to vile racist abuse.

Fans in the crowd reported seeing a group of young supporters ejected from Roots Hall on Tuesday night after allegedly making monkey chants at Blues player Elvis Bwomono.

The Blues were involved in a pre-season friendly with Millwall, with the accused fans sitting in the West Stand.

Southend United failed to provide the Echo with a statement, but a host of fans took to social media stating they had heard the abuse.

Bwomono’s agent, Mark Gotters, took to Twitter to praise the player, insisting it will only make him stronger.

The player has not made a public statement, but he did retweet his agent’s support acknowledging the abuse he had received.

Fans reported hearing chants on at least two occasions before the group was removed.

Kay Fogg, volunteer co-ordinator for the club’s Junior Blues, said: “Group of young lads thinking it’s funny to make monkey noises at Elvis. Shocked. Now escorted from the ground. No place for that...ever.

“We thought we were all mistaken the first time, then sat in disbelief the second time.

“Plenty of people around heard it too.”

After being asked whether it was home fans she said “you can only assume so, they seemed to be”. She added; “They were sat in the centre of the west, three rows up, near the centre aisle.

“Brought round to their seats by a steward before kick off. Probably only about 12 or so but still old enough to know it was wrong. Reported to the club who dealt with it promptly.”

Agent Mr Gotters said: “I have the absolute privilege of being the agent for Elvis Bwomono. A more respectful, humble young professional you couldn’t wish to meet. He has time for everyone, no matter their background, colour or religion. This will only make him stronger.”
