A LIDO which was saved from closure has undergone further upgrades.

With grant funding, old pipework has been replaced at Brightlingsea Lido and two filters have been refurbished.

New state-of-the-art water cleaning systems have been introduced cut down on chemicals. The second project, Café Lido, saw the extension of the small shed to incorporate a bigger kitchen and seating area.

The café uses volunteers and hospitality students to provide food and drinks, and income made will support the lido.

The works were part-funded by a £46,000 grant from the Government’s Coastal Revival Fund and £16,000 from the Essex County Council Community Initiative Fund.

Brightlingsea Town Council and Brightlingsea Lido Charitable Incorporated Organisation have also thrown in funds.

Brightlingsea Lido and Brightlingsea Town Council welcomed representatives from the funders along with MP Sir Bernard Jenkin and John Jowers, chairman of Essex County Council.

They were given a private tour of the upgraded facilities and an opportunity to swim in the 50-metre outdoor pool.

The lido team is fundraising for a hoist for the pool and a changing bench for the accessible changing room.

Brightlingsea Lido trustee Mick Barry said: “In a little over a year we have made big strides improving facilities, building support and protecting the lido for future generations.

“None of this would have been possible without the involvement, efforts and support of the community and our amazing volunteers.”
