A UNIVERSITY is carrying out checks to build more than 1,000 new student rooms.
Essex University applied to Colchester Council request a screening opinion for plans to build up to 1,260 student homes near the Knowledge Gateway site.
A screening opinion is the process of determining whether an environmental impact assessment is needed as part of a planning application.
The proposed Meadows 2B/2C development will be on the western side of the Knowledge Gateway.
The university has a cohort of 16,500 students and this will grow to 20,000 by the start of the 2024 academic year.
It needs to provide more accommodation to facilitate this.
The university has already created The Meadows and The Copse student blocks which provide just over 1,200 rooms.
The latest development will be ‘car free’ and, if approved, blocks will be between four and six storeys high.
