VOLUNTEERS at a popular lido saved from closure are set to celebrate the official opening of two projects today.

Brightlingsea Lido, in Promenade Way, first opened in 1932 and is the only remaining public lido in Essex.

It was saved from closure after Brightlingsea Town Council agreed to take on the lease from Tendring Council.

The town council and the new Brightlingsea Lido charity, established to run it, are celebrating the completion of two projects.

The first project has seen old and new technology merged to provide an efficient plant room.

The work, funded by a £46,250 grant from the Coastal Revival Fund, included replacing antiquated pipework.

The second project has seen a new café opened thanks to a £16,000 grant from Essex County Council’s Community Initiative Fund.

The scheme has seen the existing shed-like structure extended, doubling the size of the kitchen and adding indoor seating and decking areas.

The town council and the lido charity will today welcome representative from the Coastal Revival Fund and Essex County Council, as well as Harwich and North Essex MP Sir Bernard Jenkin and county council chairman John Jowers to the opening.

Mick Barry, town councillor and lido trustee, said: “In a little over a year Brightlingsea Lido has made big strides, improving facilities, building support and protecting the lido for future generations.

“We are grateful for the grant funding from the Coastal Revival Fund and the Community Initiatives Fund which have helped us to fund these developments.

“None of this would have been possible without the involvement, efforts and support of the community and of our amazing volunteers.”

The lido team are currently fundraising to further improve accessibility through the purchase of a hoist to access the pool and a changing bench for the accessible changing room, for which donations are being welcomed.

Longer term plans include heating the water and extending the season.

Coastal Communities Minister Jake Berry said: “Not only will this investment help to revive a much cherished landmark for the enjoyment of residents and visitors but it will help preserve the lido for future generations.”
