AN animal sanctuary is hoping its annual charity event will help to raise vital funds after last year’s cancelled event cost the home thousands in donations.

Danaher Animal Home, in Wethersfield, is looking to raise thousands of pounds by hosting a summer fun day later this month so it can continue to fund the welfare of its furry residents.

The independent charity, which works closely with the RSPCA but is entirely self-funded, each year takes in more than 700 unwanted animals which have often been abandoned or rescued from cruelty and provides them with a home until new owners are found.

Danaher needs to generate about £800,000 a year to cover its costs.

It lost an estimated £8,000 in donations after last year’s fun day had to be cancelled because of the hot weather.

Charity boss Deborah Satchell said: “The annual summer fun day is our big fundraiser of the year so last year’s cancellation meant we had a funding shortfall.

“The number of unwanted animals needing care and to find new homes is rising all the time, so this year more than ever, we need people to dig deep, make a note on their calendars, and come out and support us.”

The summer fun day includes a variety of entertaining activities and visitors can enter their four-legged friends in a charity dog show that will decide the best rescue dog, the sprightliest pensioner and see them try their paws in the agility ring, as well as plenty of games.

Bocking Brass Band will perform live and a barbecue, beer tent, home-made cakes, gift stalls and a tombola and raffle will also be on offer throughout the day.

The event takes place on Sunday, July 21, from 11am.

Entrance costs £5 per car. For more information visit danaheranimalhome.org.uk.
