DEVELOPERS have unveiled plans for 100 homes on land in West Mersea.

Mersea Homes is holding a consultation event ahead of putting in an outline application for land to the west of Dawes Lane.

The site is included as an area for development in the draft Colchester Local Plan.

Mersea Homes say the plans would also include approximately five hectares of public open space.

It says this will have the “potential to include new community facilities” but does not specify what this could be.

Stuart Cock, managing director at Mersea Homes, said: “The proposed scheme will comprise 100 dwellings, together with extensive public open space and an opportunity for new community facilities, which West Mersea has needed for many years.

“The site is identified as an emerging allocation for residential development in the draft Colchester Local Plan and we are aware Colchester Council has already approved several of these schemes which are in the same position as long as they are policy compliant.

“We are now developing these plans further and are seeking input from local people to help shape and to provide long lasting community benefits to West Mersea as a whole.

“Nothing has been set in stone at this stage and the feedback and input we receive at the public consultation event will be used to refine our proposals further ahead of any submission for planning permission.”

But campaign group stop350 has called for more discussion on infrastructure for the island in light of a number of planning applications.

A spokesman for the group said: “Residents are utterly opposed to any premature planning application. This comes on top of the outline planning application already made for Brierley Paddocks for 201 new houses submitted by developer City & Country.

“We want the whole issue of housing in West Mersea to be considered by the local plan inspector when hearings start again next year.”

The public consultation takes place tomorrow at the Glebe Pavilion, Glebe Recreation Ground, Colchester Road.

It will be held from 4pm to 7pm for people to view the proposals and share their comments.
