CAFE culture in Bangor is helping to feed the hungry whilst giving the community an economic and social lift.

The Fair Price Cafe opened three months ago in the Deiniol shopping centre.

Run by volunteers, with one paid manager, the cafe is a joint venture between Bangor Cathedral, city stake holders and Bangor University.

The socially-minded venue helps the community with all its profits going to Bangor city projects.

It also aims to provide ‘fairly priced’ food, with zero food waste and uses locally sourced produce.

According to its manager Nicky Biggins-Jones one of its latest projects is helping the homeless by providing laundry facilities.

The 5* hygiene-rated cafe is holding a fundraising afternoon tea event ‘Music from the Shows,’ at 2.30pm, on Friday, July 12.

Tickets are £10 from the cafe or Bangor Cathedral, with profits going to the laundry project. A recent musical afternoon tea raised £400.

Nicky Biggins-Jones said: “We want to help the community in Bangor get back on its feet.

“We are currently concentrating our efforts on the rough sleepers, but we plan to help youth groups and others, as well as provide a community space.

She added: “We want to raise money to provide a service to wash and dry clothes for homeless people who can’t access these facilities, we will also provide clean clothes while they wait for their laundry.”

The cafe also runs a ‘pay forward’ scheme where customers pay for an extra drink or sandwich, given to the next person who can’t buy their own.

The cafe opens Monday - Saturday, 10am-3pm, and needs more volunteers.
