IT is anticipated there will be 17 breakdowns a minute next week as the hot weather hits.

More than 121,000 breakdowns are expected on the roads and Green Flag is forecasting 17 breakdowns every minute between Sunday and Friday.

Wednesday is set to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures rising to 33 degrees in some parts of the country.

Simon Henrick at Green Flag said: “Following changeable weather, with heavy rainfall and flooding causing disruption across the country, a rise in temperatures could cause chaos on the roads next week.

"It’s important to be aware of the effects heat can have on the car’s key components, as well as the impact it can have on the road itself.

“Several of the problems drivers are likely to encounter can be avoided if drivers ensure their vehicles are checked thoroughly before setting off on a long journey."

Green Flag issued the following advice:

1. Make sure you have lots of engine coolant

2. Make sure your coolant isn't past its sell by date

3. Turn off air con when driving at slower speeds

4. Don't overload your vehicle
