IT is a heart-warming story recognised the world over and has spawned a Tony Award-winning musical, several silver screen adaptations and even a television show.
But Little Orphan Annie, a series of tales about a young red-haired girl’s life as an orphan which first started as a comic strip in the early Twenties, has now been reimagined once more by an amateur theatre company for a Braintree audience in aid of charity.
Annie Jr, a musical production courtesy of Abigail’s Performing Arts which will take place at the Braintree Arts Theatre next month and raise funds for Kids Inspire, details the charming and plucky orphan’s very first adventure around New York City in the 1930s.
Determined to track down the parents who abandoned and left her in the cruel hands of evil orphanage owner Miss Hannigan, the company’s hour and a half performance details Annie’s trip out around the Big Apple and how she comes to be acquainted with lovable pooch Sandy and billionaire Oliver Warbucks.
Speaking about the performance, director of Abigail’s Performing Arts, Abigail Overall said: “With a huge cast, just shy of 50 young adults and children from the local area, award-winning Abigail’s Performing Arts will be performing the classic musical Annie Jr in aid of Kids Inspire.
“They will re-tell the family story of Little Orphan Annie which we all know and love.
“Each member has worked incredibly hard to bring you the best show as humanly possible and they are just incredible.”
Annie Jr takes place on July 6 and 7 at 4pm.
Tickets cost £12 and are available from braintreeartstheatre.com.
