A cancer clinician at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, will take on a gruelling cycling challenge to raise money for life-saving cancer research across North Wales.

Consultant Haematologist, Jim Seale, 58, will take part in North West Cancer Research’s Cycle of Hope challenge, which will see him cycle 300 miles from Liverpool to Dublin in four days.

After spending 21 years as a Haematologist in North Wales, Jim is aware of the impact that funding can have on research projects and hopes that by taking part in the Cycle of Hope he will be able to make a contribution to other research projects in this field.

Jim said: “As someone who works closely with those affected by cancer I wanted to do something to show my support. North West Cancer Research has invested over £1,000,000 in research at Bangor University in the last three years alone, research which is helping make significant breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

“I am looking forward to raising as much money for North West Cancer Research as I can and completing what will be a challenging four days”

Despite being a keen long-distance cyclist, Jim has never completed a journey of this scale, and has spent the last six weeks training at the weekends and evenings in preparation for the cross-country challenge. Jim and his team are also busy fundraising and he plans to take a charity table at a local supermarket and at his base hospital. Jim hopes to raise more than £1,500 for North West Cancer Research.

Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research, said: “Jim’s work as a leading cancer clinician sees him diagnose and treat patients in North Wales daily. His enthusiasm and support for the challenge will help North West Cancer Research to continue funding vital life-saving research into cancer here in Bangor.”

Sponsored by Rutherford Cancer Centres who operate a national network of cancer centres, the cyclists will cover England, Wales and The Republic of Ireland between 4-7th July 2019.
