FOLLOWING on from the popularity of our look at shops in Colchester’s past we have discovered more images in our archives.
They include independent shops many will remember their grandparents and great grandparents visiting including florist and fruiterer Warrell and also the original Williams & Griffin shop front which would go on to become the well-known department store.
At the turn of the century there would have been few cars on the High Street and surrounding roads and police often got involved with directing what traffic there was.
Supermarkets were many decades in the future so shoppers routinely headed to independent traders.
