AVID quizzers helped to raise an astonishing £4,000 in aid of autism charity the Ark Centre.

But perhaps the most surprising part of the event, at Wivenhoe House Hotel, was that it was won by the Gazette’s team.

The quiz, which attracted 12 teams, was organised by Langham-based firm KAT Marketing.

Sarah Day, co-founder of the Ark Centre, said: “We’re so grateful to KAT Marketing and all the quiz supporters - amazing amount of funds raised.

“Barclays match funding is such a great initiative and all monies impact our front line services for local children with autism. Thank you again to one and all.”

Guests were treated to a night of quizzing by Tim Field, commercial solicitor at Birkett Long.

The evening’s sponsor, Barclays, doubled the amount taken on the night, through the quiz and prize draw.

All proceeds from the event will help the Chelmsford-based centre expand its operations to support a larger number of autistic children.

Alongside the quiz, bonus points were awarded for the team who built the best ark, in tribute to the evening’s beneficiary. Version Events created the best vessel.

Simon Cudmore, area business manager for Barclays, said: “We were very happy to get involved with the KAT Marketing quiz.

“It was a very enjoyable evening and all in support of such a worthy cause. Our team have enjoyed helping out and it is always rewarding when you hear back from the charity about the difference it can make in our own community.”

Dom Bowers, the Gazette’s head of content, said: “We were pleased to be part of such a enjoyable evening of fundraising for the Ark Centre.

“Having finished runners-up in the 2018-19 Colchester Mayor’s quiz, we were due a win!”
