A RADIO station is celebrating one of music’s most famous cities this bank holiday.

Brighton-based 1BTN Radio will spend Monday spinning all the greatest hits by singers from Detroit, Michigan.

The American city has spawned some of the world’s finest musicians, from Stevie Wonder to Aretha Franklin, The Temptations to The White Stripes and many more.

For 24 hours the radio waves of 1BTN will be celebrating Detroit Day.

Mickey Jukes, who works for the station, said: “Detroit Day came out of a conversation in a pub with Chris Galloway – one of our directors – and Graham McKenzie, who is a friend of the station and runs a travel company.

“He is friends with a lady called, Yolanda Fletcher, who is working with the state of Michigan to promote tourism.

“We are huge lovers of the Detroit music scene and it’s a city that gets lots of representation on the station.

“The idea was floated that we may be able to get sponsorship from the Detroit tourist Bureau and naturally we jumped at the chance.”

Mickey added that the crew at the station were incredibly excited to be able to play Detroit themed music all day long.

The music played over the 24-hour period will be solely in the hands of the disc jockeys in charge of their shows.

But as long as the band or singers are from the city, everything is fair game.

Mickey said: “We are putting together a 24-hour programme, which covers the length and breadth of the music scenes out of the Motor City.

“From Motown to techno, taking in hip-hop, jazz and funk to psych, indie and punk.

“There won’t be a lot of bands, or artists out of Detroit that won’t get played.”

Ahead of the day the 1BTN crew were taken o an all-expenses-paid trip to Detroit.

While there they did research on what makes music such a powerful entity in the city and left with interviews and videos that will be featured throughout the day.

Mickey said “Without question Detroit is up there as one of the most productive cities in the music world.

“There’s a wealth of incredible talent, it’s a real music lover’s dream.

“Projects like these are what we live for, it will be well curated, interesting and passionate.”

Founded in 2017, 1BTN radio was formed as the re-vamped version of what used to be the popular 1 Brighton FM.

The radio station can be found on DAB Digital Radio and on 101.4FM.
