A GARDEN designer has created a Himalayan haven to support Gurkhas.

Jane Scott Moncrieff has created a unique garden for the Gurkha Welfare Trust at BBC Gardeners’ World Live.

The garden, which is sponsored by Greene King, will feature about 300 Himalayan plants and will feature in the Beautiful Borders section at the Gardeners’ World show.

The theme this year is Our Space and Jane’s design creates an imaginary garden for a retired Gurkha serviceman and his family now living in the UK.

This is the second show garden Jane has created for the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

She has previously won a gold medal and Best in Show at the Sandringham Flower Show.

After the show, the plants will be used to create a new Himalayan garden at Firstsite in Colchester.

The town is home to around 700 people of Nepalese origin, including 443 Gurkha veterans and their families.

Jane said: “I am delighted the Nepalese community in Colchester will have their own Himalayan Garden.

“I believe plants must have a life after shows and thankfully most show gardeners are now of the same view.”

BBC Gardeners’ World Live attracts more than 100,000 visitors and is held at the NEC Birmingham from June 13 to 16.

The Gurkha Welfare Trust celebrates its 50th year this year and provides vital support to Gurkha veterans, their families and communities in Nepal.

Chairman of the Colchester Nepalese Society, Major Udai B Gurung MBE, has been instrumental in the creation of the new Himalayan Garden at Firstsite.
